Social Security Increases for 2010 and 2012 Uncertain; Stimulus Check Coming In 2009
This year’s 5.8% cost-of-living adjustment, the largest increase since 1982 when there was a 7.4% increase, might be the last one until 2012, predicts the Congressional Budget Office.
Though accurate estimates are difficult to make at this moment, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) envisions that only after 2012 will there be any cost-of-living adjustments and that those adjustments will be as small as 2% per year, until 2019.
The increases in cost-of-living are annually adjusted according to the consumer price index. This index measures the prices paid by an urban consumer for goods and services. Since 1975, every year brought cost-of-living increases: as high as 14.3% in 1980 and as low as 1.3 percent in 1986 and 1998.
Though we cannot expect impressive cost-of-living increases in 2010 and in the following years according to the CBO, Social Security beneficiaries will receive a onetime payment in May due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act issued this year. The amount of money each Social Security recipient will receive as a stimulus check or deposit is $250.

This is so sad that all of the money has gone to bail out the car industry and the banks yet the people like me who live on social security disability will not get a small 2 percent raise for 2 years and then all we might get until 2019 will be a small raise.. Bad Bad… I worked and pain into my social security and it is mine. I expected to get raises and be able to survive. Now I find that my raises have gone to bail out the car industry and banks and I do not like that. That is a rip off and very unfair It is hard enought to live on our small checks and everything around us is going up. I can only afford to eat one meal a day. I have to beg for my perscriptions and have to ask friends to help me out. That is demeaning to me. Don’t tell me to go to work. I did work for 37 years can no longer work. THE BANKS AND THE CAR INDUSTIRES SHOULD JUST DIE,file bankruptcy.. Why should we people who have paid taxes all of theses years bail them out. Stop helping the aliens out with our money and we might have enough to actually get a raise..
I believe that Pres Obama was a lion in sheeps clothing. Let’s look at what has happened in the 1st 3 months of office : we have bailed out every bank, along with most automobile companies. While the CEO’s of major corporations continue to FLY the Skies in private jets, dine at 5 star restaraunts,and basically mooch off of us hard working “mushrooms” called the everday working class. We are the ones struggling to pay for thier luxeries, while our homes are being foreclosed on, our credit scores drop significantly and forget about everyday living. Like going to the grocery store, we get the “bare necessities, and sometimes really can’t afford that.

This is disgusting!!.I take 2 hours to grocery shop beacuse I need to be extremely careful. I cannot afford to buy meat or produce. I wonder if Obama and Kennedy are doing this? I am sure NOT.Now I have been laid off and I`m sure I won`t receive food stamps as I have always worked for a living. Why is it that the retired people are always the ones who end up bailing this country out of trouble. The government has takenborrowed money from the social security fund time and time again and never repaid one penny of it. If they can borrow money from Chna, etc., to bail out the car industry and the mega banks, then they can borrow the money to give the old people what is due them on January 1, 2010, and would expect that to be about a 20% increase to help make up for all the increases they did not give us. This is so sad!

It’s pretty sad the goverment chooses to give 250.00 as a cost of living forus to try to get a little ahead. But for us not to get a cost of living every year really sucks. So when every thing goes up we the people on a set income with children will have to get help from churches and any body we can. I just have one question…..where did the SS surplus $85 to $90 billion per Charles Blahouse/Hudson Institute go and why do we now have just $3 billion which is being depleted at an alarming rate? If it was mis-managed…..pay it back! They can start with the personal retirement fund given to all the congressional leaders in Washington….why should they have a secured retirement plan when ours (the poor working class) has been jeopardized by their pork spending? I get $1100 a month for my social security for which I have to pay rent, lights, heat, water and food. I rely on my increases each year so I can by more food. Please don’t take away my increases. They can’t do this to us.

What with gazillions of dollars going for Social Security, Medicare, and a host of other programs promoting greed and sloth among the old poops, seems there’s hardly anything left for those that are still working to support the old folk.
Things were bad enough before but have collapsed under the weight of the millions of able bodied workers that have decided to go on the dole. Don’t they realize that they are stealing from their own grandchildren! They might just as well be eating their own young.
Lavish federal generosity to Grandma is breaking this country. The bottom line is that it’s the lazy geezers who are driving this country to ruin.
Barack Obama has already released his first plan to help those who failed to plan for their own futures by proposing no income tax for seniors who earn less than $60,000 a year. This makes no sense at all, why should I pay 20% of my income in taxes while those that are already sucking off the government teat pay nothing; all the while receiving social security, and free healthcare?
A signal wage earner earning $60,000 without deductions would pay $11,758 in taxes or 19.6%, leaving $48,242 in take home pay.
From this it is suggested that they put 15% of all earnings into a 401K for their own retirement or $7,236. This leaves $41,006 in take-home.
Since the younger person does not receive government insurance at no cost a typical plan will run $250 per month x 12 = $3,000 per year. Take home is now $38,006.
Since the younger wage earner does not get to sit home or spend the day at the casino they typically have a car payment of $250/month plus auto insurance of $150 per month. ($400 x 12 months = $4,800 per year) Take-home is now $33,206.
Conservative living expenses are:
$550/month for a one bedroom apartment, utilities included, $6,600/yr
$15/day food expenses (McDonalds value meals) $5,475/yr
$10 per month clothing (shop at good will) $120/yr
Cable TV, phone, internet, gas, and so on consider $100/month or $1,200 per year.
Now our working person earning $60,000 has been able to retain $19,811 per year after their basic living expenses.
With this $19,811 “excess income” they are supposed to live the good life, raise a family, put aside for emergency’s and perhaps even help out a family member or two.
Let’s assume our worker is a responsible 40 years old and they just now start saving.
The 401 K does not lose value and actually is worth what was put in; at retirement age 72 (since the government rules changed and this poor sod doesn’t get a permanent vacation at age 65. It is worth after 32 years of saving $231,552. Now he will be able to stop paying rent and buy a house, but since social security went bust years ago what will he live on?
If he saved ½ of his annual “excess” he now has $316,976 in the bank. If he lives to age 90 or 18 years after retirement he can have $1,467 to spend each month in his old age. If he is expected to do this why can’t our seniors?
I just don’t understand this whole concept of giving out only $250 to Social Security people Here you can bail out the banks and auto industry. But people on social security do not get no chances. People on Social security cannot go to a car dealer and buy a car which I think is really unfair. They say well if you get a job we can help. How can you get credit if they don’t want to give you a chance. I think this all needs to be changed. I think everyone should be able to go to the bank, car dealer and be able to apply and get a loan. But no, since the banks cannot touch social security we cannot get the things we need. I agree with every one who is upset about us not getting increases in our social security disability checks. There are enough of us on social security, ssi and social security disability to ban together and vote every congressman, senator and politation in washington out of office. we won’t do that because we would rather complain and are not willing to fight for our benefits. we need to all write our leaders in washington emails telling them that we will vote for their oponnets (no matter what party) if they don’t at least give us a small increase also every one needs to write President Obama and let him know how we feel. the congress, senate, and white house staff will all probably get raises in 2010.
They should get rid of the Social Security Disability Program. Have found only 1 person in my 10 year career that I found to be totally worthy of it. There is something these disabled people can do…..type, stuff envelops, work from home, etc. I disagree of sitting back, and lapping up a check. Unless you are a vegetable in a coma, you should be able to do some kind of work. No freebies…..
Hey grumpy people, if you all knew how your COLA was calculated then you would not be blaming the current administration. The factor that goes into how you get raises for Social Security were set many moons ago and it is not the administration saying no raise it is set by federal law, SO QUIT BITCHING. Oh yeah and remember no matter who is President they would have given up the money as well to the banks and car companies. Remember Bush, well he gave money as well so stop blaming the current guys they are just trying to do something. Look back at how the law was written and blame it on the people you voted for then.

I feel the pain of all the posters. My wife and I kind of took the bull by the horns and moved to Mexico 2 1/2 years ago and never looked back. While we are not in the upper class we are in the high middle class here and on Social Security. We joined the thousands of others who have done the same and have made great friends here. We live much better than we ever could have imagined and while we did not get the stimulus check, because we live out of the country, we say “the hell with it”. We have free medical care including prescriptions with no deductibles or co-pays and are treated in the some of the best facilities in the world in Guadalajara only 30 minutes away. We were pleased to learn that many of the doctors and surgeons used in the US are actually flown up there from here to treat patients. The Mexico we live in no way resembles the things you see and hear on TV.

i agree with these people i live on ssi and we have a hard time paying bills putting food in our house this income is all we live on it isnt fair we have to live like that.
give us our money back now if you dont want more families on the street.
we should not have to give up our income to support the car companies or anything else we live from dad to day wondering where our next meal is coming from or if we will have utilities the next day.

I for one will stop spending on everything other then my monthly bills. See how much money they get from me not spending on taxable items etc.Let all the stores close and our Government can take the credit, and no surprise when they say “HOW THE HELL DID THIS HAPPEN? I will also have to stop helping my grandson out because all his mother spends his social security checks from his deceased father is on drugs, alcohol & gambling.He comes to me when he needs shoes and other necessities. I know many grandparents who are supporting their children and their grandchildren. And guess how they are doing that. You guessed, they are doing without themselves. I want my Social Security increase which I was promised for the 54 yrs of service I paid in. Will have to choose between heat or food without a raise next year in social security. I have a young couple living near me in their twenty’s who get ssdisability and who seem pretty healthy, They free medical care and food stamps, even have money to buy a new car.Just stay home making babies. Never paid into ss, they just use mine. Never vote democrat.can not find any good moral or christian ones.
I don’t feel in the least bit sorry for Social Security recipients because some of them have seriously hurt the system. Social Security disability has destroyed the system. Half the people on disability CAN work and SHOULD work. They all have BOO BOOS(hurt knee, arm etc). I have a friend whose brother has epilepsy and got fired from 3 jobs as an accountant and feels he needs SSI now I ask how many people have epilepsy, diabetes etc and can work.As far as the stimulus be happy with $250.00. I got nothing.
I do not understand all the hype. I am 65 an just began my Social Security. As workers in the past, we were to plan for our SS and not depend on it entirely for existence.
It truly is a shame that people do not feel that they can not help the United States a little bit when times are tough.I have been working for 55 years. I am 70. You do the math. Nobody told me it came on a silver plate and it doesn’t. If we do not help our auto manufacturers and our financial institutions there will be no economy and “0″ SOCIAL SECURITY. I will bet what you are getting is better than a sharp stick in the eye. Don’t tell me you can’t work, I have 9 fused discs in my back, a bad heart, ulcers and lots more. I work about 10 hours a day, 6 days a week. Go away with your pity pottys and get up off of your A** and go to work.
I have one complaint with Social Security. I have been divorced for over 37 years and remarried for 35 years. Because my ex-wife did not remarry she receives the equivalent of half of my Social Security. This is really wrong.

I had brain surgery in 2003 and have been unable to work since. My husband is a wildland firefighter and is considered to be a migrant worker, but is not eligile for any migrant worker benefits. We have four(4) small children and are trying to put away money for their college education,but it seems that what ever we put away we have take out to survive. So this is saying that our CHILDRENS Education is not as important to the Government as it use to be. The government tells you what you want to hear and then they do the total opposite. And this $250 stimulus ARE THEY SERIOUS THAT BARELY COVERS MY CAR PAYMENT!!!
If I remember correctly, those of us that are on Social Security got the $250 and were promised (lol, they were meant to be broken) that our benefits would not be taken away from us. Well, the Cost of Living Adjustment is a benefit, and with none, then our benefits are being taken away. We all need to lobby congress, just a the corporations do, to have a minimum COLA. I think a good minimum would be to match it with whatever raises congress decides to to give themselves. If congress says they’re not giving themselves a raise, then we shouldn’t get one, period.
Yes, inflation is down, but the actual cost of living is rising with the fuel costs (last year I was paying $.989 a therm for natural gas service, and now I am paying more than $2.00 per therm, and I live in Atlanta GA). I can’t even afford a car, and mass transit in Atlanta just jumped from 52.50 for a monthly transcard to 60.00. Is SSA going to give us a raise for that, I don’t think so, but if we don’t get one, there’s no way we can afford mass transit either.
What are the people that depend on social security and not going to get their raise. A lot depend on the annual raise to get along, yet congress gives themself a raise. I DO NOT understand why? Cand anyone explain this to me?
I’m on disibitly as well as my husband. We didn’t plan on going on disibitly. My husband has seizures and had work sense he was 17 (now 62) but due to some of the pills he takes for them he has short term memory problems and still has seizures. I went on disibitly about two years ago after having to fight for it. We both tried going through vocational rehab to get a job. There was nothing they could do and I even try training for a new job but the doctor said not to it. But I’m in my late 50’s now. We plan a budget to try and stay within our income but when gas for your car, food, rent, phone, lights, etc goes up and other things going wrong it doesn’t take long to get behind. Increase would have help. If we can’t get a raise why can’t they at least changed the income level for ones on social security and give us food stamps so we can try and make ends meet. If you think about it we get paid 12 times a year but there is 52 weeks in a year so we have four weeks where we don’t get a check like the ones working. 52 weeks = 13 for very four. That makes us have to come up with food, gas for car, more pills plus whatever else comes up. We are in a no win place.
I am a 42 year old lady I live alone and I get 600.00 a month of that I pay rent, eletric, phone,car insurance of which is 78.00 a month. That increase each year helps me out alot, and now not getting it will effect everything. They wont allow me to do any kind of work or they cut off my check so I can’t even work 5 or 10 hours a week just to help make ends meet. My medication copay is about 25 dollars a month I know that isn’t much but when you live on 600 a month every little penny counts. I would like to see the people that make these desions try to live on what I made for a week they could’nt do that much less a month. We need this money each year. Oboma bail out all these car places what is he gonna get a new car two or three times a year for their help well I hope he enjoys them enjoy this Oboma when you sleep at night I hope you dream about the millions of people who are doing with out because of you.

My husband and I have worked for over 40 years, we were promised, and paid for(not given) benefits. We paid into the system and will never get back what was paid in. Now we lose even more! s it not bad enough that we still pay for medicare? Even though we paid for it every week for all the time we worked? We still pay 98.00 a month, we are not “given” anything. But this year we do not even get our little piddly raise! I do not and can not get anything until I am 66, because if I retire at 62 I lose over half of what I have paid in. There are six people in my house since katrina and we live on less than 2300.00 a month. LOL….out of this we pay 650.00 a month for a house note, 352.00 a month electric, then we have meds,phone ect. So we live with 410 a month for gas, and food….for 6 people!! Does Mr. Obama think he is helping us by giving us 250.00 in May??? PPPLLLEEAAASE!!! Go pick on someone who has the money to take…Yes i am one Angree American!!
im a 67 year old woman that gets a little over 500.oo dollars a month. i have to pay 300 a month for rent and pay my light bill. im also handicapped. i get 148. dollars a month for food. that doesnt last a month as high as prices are. where does my soap, laundry supplies come from? shampoo, gas to go to the store? i have to pay on my medications too. i voted for president obama,,,i put all my faith and trust in him and i pray to God everyday that he will do something for us. im afraid for our country and my childrens futures.we need our raise on our checks to survive. please tell me president obama what are you going to do to help us? i love my country and i God bless everyone who is struggling to survive. please give us something to want to live for. i dont need much, just my little raise on my soc, sec, check. are you giving us a stimulus check in 2010? please respond, i need to hear from you.
I, too, live on SS disability. And yes, I get food stamps – a whopping $53.00 a month. Most of that goes for cheap hamburger for my 2 little dogs. Oh, yes, pets are a “luxury”, but I will not see them go hungry or be abandoned. My monthly bills are barely covered, yet for 40 years I paid into a system that no longer works for me as I did for it. Am I unhappy? You bet. What can I do about it? Very little. Once I reach age 60, with my medical problems, then what will happen? No help from Washington on any front. Clean out the White House, the Senate and the House – start over, and NO attorneys in office!
The money you put into the social security system financed retires while you worked. Those that work today finance your retirement now. You earned credits to deterimine how much you get from todays earners. There is 3 paying workers for every one retiree right now and it will go down to two in the next few years because there will not be enough young workers to pay ss to retirees. If you do not want ss to bankrupt itself then illegal immigrants need to become legal so that they can legally pay money into the ss system to fund curent checks, your checks. You put in for those who are long gone. Only new ss taxes fund current social security liabilities. So we can be predudice and starve or we can open up and not go hungary, based on. What I have seen we are too proud to do the right thing. We were all iMmigrants once. Currently it is near impossible to get on disability and you need to work Þo get social security. Show proof not arrigance and God will bless this country once again. Show more pride and we go down the tubes. No one can afford to live on what they did in the past.
